Spring Spruce Up!

Spring is in full bloom, and it’s the perfect time to make water‑wise choices at home! Simple steps toward efficiency not only keep your home and landscape thriving, but they also protect our shared environment. A seasonal spruce‑up goes a long way: from fixing hidden leaks to upgrading fixtures, small updates can lead to big savings for your wallet and lasting benefits for our community. With mindful decisions, you can reduce waste, lower utility bills, and help safeguard water (our most valuable resource) all year long.

Indoor Spruce Up:

  • Check Toilets for Silent Leaks
If you see our team out and about, grab a free leak detection kit (while available), or test at home by adding a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank – if color appears in the bowl without flushing, you’ve got a leak to fix.
  • Upgrade Old Fixtures to WaterSense Certified Models
Swap out older toilets, faucets, and showerheads for WaterSense®‑labeled fixtures to cut daily water use. Check with your local municipality for FREE water‑saving devices, and see if your community qualifies for our $125 Toilet Rebate on our eligibility map!
  • Shorten Showers and Install a Timer
Cutting just 2–3 minutes off each shower can save hundreds of gallons per month. A simple shower timer helps the whole household stay on track.
  • Run Appliances Only with Full Loads
Always run your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads to maximize water efficiency and save.

Outdoor Spruce Up:

Your outdoor space sets the tone for your home; keeping it green shouldn’t drain our limited water resources. The EPA’s WaterSense® program encourages homeowners to adopt water-smart landscapes. Take a proactive approach that uses the right plants, efficient watering practices, and thoughtful design to reduce outdoor water use all season long.

Choose:

  • Native or Drought-Tolerant Plants
  • Improve Your Soil
  • Mulch Wisely
  • Water Only When Needed

Create a yard that thrives beautifully with far less water usage. These simple practices save time, save money, and help protect South Florida’s environment. Learn more about creating a water-efficient yard epa.gov/watersense/water-smart-landscape-design.
